Stories of memory,
food and ritual.

What is The Hearth List?

The Hearth List is a cultural project exploring the human condition through memory, food and the rituals surrounding the act of preparing and sharing a meal.

We don’t see eating and drinking as ends in themselves. We’re interested in what they reveal: stories, bonds, customs, beliefs and ways of inhabiting the world. We understand cooking as a cultural act and a form of transmission between people and generations.

Through conversations, photography, sound and video, we are building a living archive of stories around the table, made to be explored and shared.

Our territory

Between haute cuisine and industrial food lies a vast territory: that of the people, traditions and rituals that have shaped our relationship with food. This is our territory.

We are interested in the culinary culture that is passed from person to person, often anonymously and without leaving a trace. A way of cooking, a celebration, a family recipe, a conversation around the table. We are not here to define what good food is, but to observe what our relationship with food tells us about who we are and how we live.

Do you have
a story to share?

It might be your own, or someone else’s.
A story around food and cooking worth preserving.

An archive in the making

The Hearth List was created to gather stories that are often left out of official narratives about food.

A list of stories passed from person to person. Small rituals and memories that speak to our relationship with food and with one another.

An open, independent, multicultural archive, built slowly and with an international outlook.
